5 Signs Your West Texas Roof Needs Attention After a Storm

June 30, 2026MCMaster Roofing & Construction

Out here on the South Plains, a single afternoon storm can drop hail the size of a quarter and push winds past 60 mph. Sometimes the damage is obvious — a missing shingle, a dented gutter, a leak in the ceiling. But a lot of the time, hail and wind damage hides in plain sight and only shows up months later as a leak, a soft deck, or a denied insurance claim because too much time has passed.

If a storm just rolled through Lubbock or anywhere on the Caprock, here are five things worth checking before you forget it ever happened.

What to look for

  • Missing, cracked, or curled shingles. Walk the perimeter of your house and look up. Anything sitting funny, lifted at a corner, or completely gone is a red flag — water will find that spot the next time it rains.
  • Granules collecting in your gutters or at downspouts. Those little black/gray pebbles are the protective coating on asphalt shingles. A pile of them after a hailstorm usually means the shingles took a beating, even if they still look fine from the ground.
  • Dents on metal vents, flashing, or gutters. These soft metal surfaces are the easiest place to spot hail. If your turbine vents or AC unit are dimpled, your roof almost certainly is too.
  • Water stains on ceilings or in the attic. A brown ring on a bedroom ceiling, or daylight visible through the roof deck in the attic, means water has already gotten through.
  • A roof that's simply getting old. Most asphalt roofs in West Texas last 20–30 years. If yours is in that range and just took a beating, the storm may have used up whatever life it had left.
